BOULDER - Sphero, formerly Orbotix, has appointed Mike Capps, a gaming industry veteran and former president of Epic Games, to its board of directors, joining as the company's first independent director.

While at Epic Games, Capps led development and creation of the award-winning Unreal Engine, a widely used suite of integrated tools for game developers. He also managed all of Epic's tech and game products, including the billion-dollar franchise Gears of War.

He currently serves on the boards of a number of video game companies and industry organizations, including Remedy Entertainment and the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.

"Mike is one of the most highly regarded, successful and well respected development executives in the game business," said Paul Berberian, Sphero CEO.

"Sphero is at the forefront of transforming the way kids play, by connecting digital and physical play in creative and meaningful ways," said Capps. "I'm honored to be a part of this dynamic team and I'm excited to help with their exciting plans to expand Connected Play worldwide."
