BOULDER -- A new report from Navigant Research finds there are now at least 355 smart city projects in 221 cities around the world.
The report tracks global smart city projects across the smart energy, smart water, smart transportation, smart buildings, and smart government sectors.
The global smart city market is moving into a period of increasing maturity as more cities embrace innovation to streamline and enhance city services and operations, according to the report.
Across all major regions, smart city projects continue to increase substantially, both in number and level of ambition.
“Cities are developing more innovative smart city programs and deploying proven solutions at commercial scale,” said Ryan Citron, Navigant senior research analyst.
“Projects that integrate data and insights across multiple operations and service sectors are also becoming more common. These developments are happening in all major world regions, with recent surges of interest in North America and Australia, further acceleration of the Indian smart cities program, and continued development across Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa.”
On the technology front, according to the report, smart street lighting is increasingly being recognized by city leaders as a first step toward the development of a smart city. Additionally, smart parking systems, mobility solutions, air quality monitoring, and smart waste are also becoming common deployments.
The report, Smart City Tracker 1Q18, provides an assessment of the current state of smart city development around the globe. New projects have been added that show continued investment in open data platforms, smart grid technologies, networked LED street lights, urban mobility, energy efficient buildings, water management, and government service applications for smart cities.
The report covers key industry sectors as they relate to smart cities: smart energy, smart water, smart transportation, smart buildings, and smart government. A new category, multi-sector programs, captures the evolution toward project deployments that cut across multiple industry sectors.
The Tracker also segments deployments by project type, including policy initiatives, pilots/demonstrations, commercial deployments, sustainability programs, and city developments. The 355 projects included in this Tracker are segmented by region, project type, and industry sector.
